The Importance of Physical Fitness

Today more than ever the importance of physical fitness cannot be emphasized enough.

Our society has shifted to a more sedentary lifestyle which increases the importance of making time to maintain your fitness and body weight.

Being less active is one biggest contributors to the obesity epidemic that plaques millions of Americans each year, but it is not just simply spending more time on the couch watching tv that is to blame.

The foods that we consume has changed and now our diets now consist of more processed, less nutritious foods that only magnify the need to get up and get moving.

When I think of some of the main contributors to why there has been a decline in the importance of physical health over the last 10, 20 or even 30 years the first things that come to my mind are:

  • Fast Food – The major fast food retailers have become household names and many people know the menu for their favorite chain by heart, sad! The economy has been is a record-breaking downward spiral but companies inside the fast foods arena have thrived.
  • Both parent working – with more and more middle class families consisting of both parents working to make ends meet, the amount of home cooked meals has experienced landslide declines and a skyrocket in the amount of take out calls to local restaurants.
  • Technology – with the addition of new tech products such as smart phones, tablets, the ability to record your favorite tv shows with one click of the remote, people are spending more time playing with their gadgets than they are thinking about their health and fitness.
  • Social Media – need I say more, if just one-third of the time most people spend on social media sites such as Facebook, Twitter and Pinterest was spent working to maintaining their cardiovascular health and body weight, we would be one of the healthiest nations on earth.

So it is plain to see why we are the way we are, but how to we make the changes needed to get obesity in our county turned around?

It all starts with education followed by action, today we will start with the importance of physical fitness.

Importance of Physical Fitness

Selling the world on the importance of physical fitness is not going to be an easy task.

Think about some of the questions many doubters of physical fitness might ask:

  • Why is it important to stay fit
  • Why is physical fitness important
  • Why is fitness so important

Think about it, how many of our daily tasks can now be done online, from our driver’s seat or with a simple phone call.

It has gotten so bad that recent surveys show that only 30% of our nations adults get the recommended 30 minutes of physical exercise each day, the survey also noted that 25% of the adult population get no exercise at all.

This explains the high level of obesity, heart disease and a spike in the number of type 2 diabetes cases in the United States.

The good news is that you can overcome diseases like these and it is never too late to get up and get moving and you too can enjoy the benefits of physical fitness.

Benefits of Physical Fitness

So you know why you should be exercising regularly but what are the benefits of physical fitness?

Consistent physical exercise just makes you feel better and will make you a happier person but it does not stop there, here are just a few of the benefits of consistent physical exercise:

  • Weight loss and weight management
  • Improved cardiovascular performance, muscle performance, muscle strength, endurance and joint flexibility.
  • Decreases your risk of heart disease, stroke, colon cancer, diabetes and high blood pressure.
  • Fewer doctor visits and can even eliminate the need to take certain medications.
  • Can relieve the symptoms of stress, anxiety and depression.

Physical fitness does not have to be a chore or something that you “have to do”, it can actually be fun and enjoyable when you find physical activities that you like.

What Physical Activities Are Beneficial?

When you are just getting started, it is not about what physical activity you are doing, just that you are doing something.

Any type of moderate physical activity such as walking, swimming, jogging, biking, playing sports can all help you get more physically fit.

The best thing to do is find what you enjoy, try different things that suit your activity level, lifestyle and your interests.

Be sure to start each exercise or physical activity with at least 5-10 minutes of stretching and warming up your body, this will help you prepare your body for physical activity.

Once you are warm you should shoot for at least 20-30 minutes of physical activity followed by a 5-10 minute cool down period.

The key is to be smart and have fun but do not try to do anything your body cannot physically handle and you will soon be reaping the benefits of physical fitness.

Who Needs Physical Fitness?

Everyone needs to understand the importance of physical fitness and get more exercise in their daily routine.

Almost 70% of Americans have reported not getting the recommended amount of consistent exercise each and every day.

Physical fitness will help you prevent many of the major chronic health problems that effect so many people each and every year.

You have people in your life who are depending on you and you at least owe it to them to be the best you you can be.

You now know the importance of physical fitness, so my question to you, what are you going to do about it now that you know?
