Setting goals is something that we have all done since we were little kids but most people don’t know how to set goals for success.
Think back to when you were a child, what did you aspire to be one day?
A doctor, lawyer, maybe even the president.
Maybe you are one of the lucky ones who actually lived out your dreams and became what you wanted to be, if so congratulations, I hope it is everything you dreamed it to be.
For those of us who are not living the life that we dreamed about as a young child, we know that just thinking and dreaming about something is not enough.
We have all heard it many times in our lives that we can be and do anything that we want to be/do and I firmly believe that but we have to decide what it is we want, how we are going to get it, then have the perseverance to take consistent action and make it happen.
Success is something that is not given out, it is earned and only those who follow the process will ever truly achieve the success they desire.
People have different opinions on all the details in the process to success, but I think we all can agree that everyone’s “process” begins with effective goal setting.
I personally am no expert on goal setting but here is how I believe the process of goal setting should go.
How To Set Goals For Success
1. Write down your goals
I strongly believe that your goals take on a whole new meaning, they become real when you take the time to write them down.
Making a list of your goals is a critical step in your path to success because once you have established your list, not only will you have something you can review everyday to keep your goals fresh in your mind but your list will also give you a sense of direction that you may have been missing before.
The great thing about your list is you can add new goals as you accomplish others or whenever you see fit, just be true to yourself and only set goals which satisfy what you truly want, not what others want for you.
Its easy to get caught in the trap of setting goals that will make other people happy, trust me, it will be you putting in the work, you making sacrifices to achieve your goals so your focus should be to set more effective goals which should center around something that you want, something that will make YOU happy.
2. Be specific and detailed
This is a step that a lot of people miss, while writing down your goals is a great first step but if your goals are not specific and include details such as the steps you are going to take to accomplish them, any outside assistance you may need, and a way to measure whether you were successful in accomplishing your goal or not, then it is going to be much more difficult for your goals to become a reality.
For instance if I just wrote on my list that I wanted to lose weight or make a lot of money then how would I ever know if I reached my goal or not?
Think about establishing your goals as if you were starting a new business, would you start a business without a solid business plan? I hope not..
No you would take time a plan out every detail you can think of to ensure you know exactly what you are going to do and how you are going to do it so you will have a better chance of your business being a success.
Think back to to the lose weight goal, let’s use that as one of our effective goal setting examples:
Goal: I will lose 20 pounds by December 31, 2015
To accomplish my goal of losing 20 pounds by December 31, 2015 I will reduce my calorie intake to 1500 calories per day by planning and preparing all my meals at home so that I can control the ingredients and portion sizes that I am consuming.
My diet will consist of whole foods including lean proteins, fresh fruits and vegetables and I will eliminate all processed, fried and all foods which are high in sugar and/ or fat.
To ensure that I am getting the proper levels of vitamins, minerals and supplements, I will use a select few Advocare trim and wellness products which will help keep my body optimized for increased energy and appetite control.
I will increase my physical activity by working out at the gym for 1 hour, 4 days a week and walk for at least 30 minutes a day after dinner.
I will drink 1 gallon of water per day and not eat anything after 7 pm.
To help me stay motivated I will partner with my wife and friends to work out or join me on walks.
I could have easily added more specifics and details to my goal but hopefully you get the point.
3. Stick to your goals. Avoid distractions!
No matter what your goals are, be consistent in the action you take to achieve them.
No cheating!! cheating on your goal setting list is like cheating on yourself, I mean really!! you took all that time mapping out your goals and you know you want to achieve them, so why cheat?
You will find that it can become very easy to let distractions derail your progress and cause you set backs along the way but try and remember why you set your goals in the first place and what your life is going to be like when you achieve them.
Distractions, set-backs and delays happen, its inevitable, don’t beat yourself up about it and get down, get your ass back up, dust yourself off and get back on the damn track!!
How To Set Goals For Success
We have covered several of the keys to effective goal setting in this post, I hope you found something in my rambling that will help you set more effective goals and increase your chances for success.
I am far from an expert on the subject but I am actively studying the subject and implementing what I am learning into my life so that I can be the best person for myself and for my family.
If you are on a similar quest and would like to know where to go from here to learn more about goal setting for success, I suggest picking up a great audio-book by Grant Cardone called the 10x Rule, (not an affiliate link), I guarantee you will look at effective goal setting in a whole new way, (the audio-book is much better than the actual book, you can’t hear Grant’s passion for the subject in text as good as you can in audio).
