Before we get to the nuts and bolts of how to set up your blog we must first take care of a few things, the first being how to choose your blog niche topic.
Lets call this the planning phase.
Planning, but Justin, I just want to get started making money right now.
All successful businesses start with a solid business plan, blogging is a business and we are going to plan this puppy out before we start.
I do not recommend it but if you are a “non-planner” and just want to wing it, you can skip this step. Good Luck!
Good, your still here, very smart decision..
How To Choose Your Blog Niche Topic
Deciding on your blog niche topic should be the very first thing you do before you ever buy a domain or add any content for your readers.
After all you will want to find out what the best topics to blog about are as well as the blog niche topic that make money.
Typically bloggers whose intentions are to make money will focus on the solving a problem that other people have and provide a solution to that problem in the form of their content and the products they recommend.
You are probably wondering what problem you can help others solve.
Lets say your blog niche is overcoming social anxiety, people are searching for a solution to cure their fear of social situations.
You would create a blog that discusses various topics related to social anxiety and recommend the best product on the market for solving that problem.
Hope that makes sense.
Your blog’s topic, also called its niche, should meet these criteria:
- A topic your are passionate about (or)
- A topic you are at least interested in.
- A topic that is profitable
- A topic that has a wide range of related products
- A topic with a lot of other people interested in it.
So lets break each one of these down a little further
A topic you are passionate about – think about what you are passionate about, is it a certain sport, making money online, health and fitness, etc.
In my opinion, you will have a much better chance of succeeding if you are passionate about the blog niche topic because your passion will show through in everything that you put in your blog.
People who try to create blogs about topics they are not passionate about tend to be by dry and boring with no character or uniqueness.
Think about what makes you you, start there and brainstorm ideas of what to blog about.
The two most popular and most competitive blog niche ideas are weight loss and making money online.
I would suggest avoiding these two if you are just getting started as they are much more difficult to gain market share in.
But don’t let me discourage you though, if weight loss or making money online are what you are passionate about, then by all means go for it.
I just want you to know you will have a little bit longer road ahead of you than someone who would be entering an easier blog niche.
Are you beginning to come up with a few ideas?
This can be difficult for some people because they are not passionate about anything, others knew exactly what they wanted to start their blog about before I ever created this post.
So you are not really passionate about a specific topic and need help picking one.
If this is you, don’t worry, is there a topic you are at least interested in?
Lets say for instance you are interested in taking up golf, you don’t know much yet but you want to learn, starting a golf themed blog could be a good way for you to learn the game and make money at the same time.
You do not have to be an expert on the topic, you just have to know a little more than the average joe.
Since you will be learning daily, you can quickly pick up enough information to get up to the expert level, so don’t worry if you know very little about the topic.
There are millions of possible profitable niche ideas out there, the ones I mentioned are just a few examples.
The key here is to narrow it down to one specific blog niche so that we can move on to the next step in the planning phase.
I would advise taking as much time as you need to determine your niche blog topic, remember you will be blogging, marketing and learning daily about this topic so make sure it something that interests you.
What if you very passionate about more than one topic, unless these are closely related I would advise choosing the one that has the most potential for profit and saving the others for later down the road.
Remember that this will not be the only blog that you start in your lifetime and that once your blog gets a strong hold of the market, you will have plenty of time to begin other projects as you see fit.
I have always found that breaking down a niche into smaller sub niches is a much more effective way of reaching your desired audience.
For instance, the health and fitness niche is a massive collection of thousands of sub niches or niche blog topics you can use as a way to enter the market.
In this example lets say we want to target weight loss, even weight loss is too broad for us, we want to target something even more specific, lets say weight loss for diabetics.
Weight loss for diabetics would be a much more specific niche than just weight loss, and you would be able to target a very specific audience and market very specific products to your visitors.
If it were me, this is the path I would chose to travel down instead of trying to tackle the over-crowded general weight loss niche.
Some of the most successful blog topics I have gone with are micro niches which are related to a much bigger niche.
If you need help in brainstorming ideas for your blog niche topic, here is a list of blog niche ideas.
How To Choose Your Blog Niche Topic
A topic that is profitable – a very important step is determining how to choose your blogs niche topic is to find out if there is a potential for profit within your niche.
There are many ways to make money from a blogs, also called monetizing your blog, including:
- Affiliate products
- Creating and selling your own product
- Selling a service related to your niche
- PPC ads, Pay Per Click
- Other display or banner advertising
I find the best way to determine what products are available for your blog niche is to head over to Google and do a search for your potential niche, check out what others are doing, are they promoting specific products, if so you may have a potential for profit in this niche.
But don’t let that mislead you, you still will need to determine how many people are searching for products or solutions to the problems that your niche addresses.
For this you will need to know and understand the specific keywords associated within your niche.
Finding and understanding your keywords is a crucial step in determining how much potential profit your niche has.
If people are simply not searching for keywords, the odds of making money is going to be very difficult.
You want a niche that has a lot of monthly searches, this means that many other people are interested in what you will have to say within your blog and will be interested in the products you will be recommending.
It is not mandatory, but I have always looked for a blog niche topic with a wide range of quality products, this allows me to test multiple products at multiple price points to determine which ones convert the best.
If your niche only has one or two available products to sell that do not convert well, you may have hungry buyers that aren’t interested in buying what you are selling.
I have devoted an entire post to keyword research here, as there is a lot to cover.
But the premise is that you must determine how many people each month are searching for buyer keywords about your niche and the products related to that niche.
This probably all sound confusing to you.
Don’t worry I will be covering keyword research in my next post, before we every get to picking a domain.
