Weight loss is hard for so many people because we love food, and not just any food, we love the kinds of foods that we know we should not be eating.
I will be honest, eating foods like double cheese burgers and fries, pizza, anything fried, sodas and a whole host of other high fat foods is what got me to almost 300 lbs before I decided enough was enough and made a decision to take my life back and say no to the foods I knew were going to eventually cause me a long series of medical problems and probably an early death.
Don’t get me wrong, I am not writing this to scare you or convince you that you must stop eating the foods that you love, I believe that you truly want to lose weight and are just looking for a little guidance to get started from someone who has already been down the road you are about to travel.

Weight Loss – 10 Tips To Help You Get Started
Admit you have a weight loss problem and take action – The longer you delay in admitting you need to lose weight the harder its going to be to get going. I knew I needed to lose weight when I had just 20 pounds to lose but I didn’t and waited until I had nearly 100 pounds to lose, trust me it get harder and takes a lot longer the more you have to lose. The time is right now to take action and get your life back.
Leave your excuses at the door – There is never a good time to start a weight loss plan, let’s face it, we are all extremely busy living our lives and fitting in time to exercise and prepare healthy meals seems impossible but you must put you first and find a way to make it happen. Whether this is convenient or not, the time is now and there is no room for excuses.
Learn from past failed attempts to lose weight – I can bet this isn’t your first time trying to lose weight or diet and more than likely you have had some successes and probably even more weight loss failures in your past. Think back to what worked and what didn’t and learn from your past attempts to not make the same mistakes twice, it only delays your results.
Get rid of the bad foods – we all know that if it is not there you cannot eat it and there is no reason to test your willpower if you do not have to so before you get started do a clean sweep of your home, your car, even your desk drawers at work and get rid of all the bad foods that will only prevent you from achieving your weight loss goals.
Build your support team – research has shown that people who have a strong support team achieve better results, it makes sense that if you have people who are encouraging you along the way and keeping you from falling off track that you will be less likely to cheat on your plan and will feel obligated to not let them down. Think about who is your family, circle of friends or even co-workers you can depend on to help you and be there for you as you take this journey to a new you.
Set SMART goals – goal setting is a crucial step in the process because without goals you cannot track your progress and you will never have anything to work towards, Yes saying I want to lose 100 pounds is a goal but is it a SMART goal, no.
A SMART goal is one that is specific, measurable, attainable, results focuses and time bound so instead of saying you want to lose 100 pounds, break it up into smaller more realistic goals such as: I will lose 20 pounds within 90 days by exercising at least 30 minutes a day and eating a clean diet.
Remind yourself everyday of why you are doing this – Trust me, there are going to be days, sometimes weeks where you feel like giving up or don’t have any motivation to keep putting in the effort to achieve your goals.
This is where you will need to have someway to remind yourself each and every day why you are losing weight in the first place, could it be that you have a family who depends on you and you want to be as healthy as you can for them or maybe you just want to look good this summer in your bikini, whatever your reason, find a way to remind yourself everyday several times why it is you are doing this and it will help you stay on track and motivated.
I put pictures of me at my heaviest weight all throughout the house, in my truck and at my office so I can be reminded of a weight I never want to be at again.
Hold yourself accountable – Odds are no one is going to know if you are secretly cheating on your diet or not exercising like you should be except you and after-all you are doing this to improve your health and wellness so why cheat yourself by not holding yourself accountable. I find that the best way to keep myself accountable is to keep a food and exercise journal everyday so that I can see exactly what I am eating and the amount of physical activity I am doing each day.
This is a great way to find out what’s working and what is not and if you are like me you will avoid cheating because you know that cheat meal will have to go in the journal and be a constant reminder of how I didn’t do as well as I could have.
If writing in a journal everyday is not for you, there are plenty of apps on your smartphones that are great for tracking your calorie intake and amount of exercise you did each day, I recommend the Lose It app, it’s pretty awesome.
Be active everyday – Eating healthy foods will help you lose weight whether you work out or not but if you truly want to be healthy then adding at least 30-60 minutes of moderate physical activity is crucial for your success. There are a lot of skinny people who are unhealthy because they are not active, you want to achieve the weight you desire but also be healthy at the same time.
Plan for setbacks – setbacks and failures are a part of this process and you cannot beat yourself up when they happen. Remind yourself that tomorrow is a new day and if you slip today, you can get back up and get started again tomorrow.
